Nobody looks stupid when they are having fun
Nobody looks stupid when they are having fun ~ Amy Poehler
As an extreme extrovert and merrymaker, I enjoy bringing people together and seeing their happiness. With event planning as part of my professional career, stepping up to be a hostess for Sisters on the Fly seemed natural to me. Since the end of 2020 I’ve hosted 26 events with a few more planned for later this year. As sisters, we can choose which events to host based on our own interests. I intentionally plan my events with a variety of activities to appeal to many sisters.
When choosing the name for an event, I have my own unique approach. I first think of a venue or activity, then try to pick a silly name with a pun to highlight what it is. This is the fun part for me and a way to make it my own.
A few names and activities I’ve used over the years include:
- Blossoms and Brunch – this event was the very first event I We walked around Norfolk Botanical Gardens, followed by a luncheon.
- Shake Your Shamrocks – a Patrick’s Day luncheon.
- Lions, Tigers, & BEERS Oh My! – a visit to the zoo followed by lunch at a visit to the zoo followed by lunch at a brewery.
- Creepin it Real – an annual camping event I host on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on Halloween weekend, which includes a costume contest and dinner at a local brewery. We’ve added chili cook offs and pumpkin painting over the years.
From these few event listings, you may notice the variety of activities. Other events I have planned included activities such as axe throwing, movie night, and many 2–3-night camping events. As I write this, I laughed out loud recalling the questions and comments I received from those who had not yet read the event description for an upcoming event, which I named “Junk in the Trunk”. This event idea came to me around the campfire as I listened to sisters tell each other things like “I wish I hadn’t bought that chair”, yet another says, “oh, I’ll buy it from you!”. Junk in the Trunk will be a camping event in June consisting of sisters bringing anything camping or outdoor related along to the event which they wish to get rid of. We will set everything up at the hostess sites, and sisters may swap, buy, or sell each other’s items – think of it as a Sister Swap Meet of sorts.
Sisters, I encourage each of you to step out of your comfort zone, try something new, and have fun! New sisters – don’t be afraid to show up to your first event, I’ve never known any sister to meet strangers, only new friends. Do as much or as little as you choose. We are all here to be each other’s cheerleaders and to empower each other. I hear so many women say, “I don’t think I’d be a good fit because I don’t enjoy camping.” I know many sisters who do not camp and quite frankly, do not want anything to do with it. Sisters on the Fly offers opportunities for all! Whether it’s camping, fishing, cycling, quilting, antiquing, kayaking, bowling, watching a movie, meeting for lunch, or axe throwing, there are activities out there for each person to be able to enjoy. Get out there this year, meet your sisters, enjoy their camaraderie, and try something new. As one of your hostesses, I will continue to strive to facilitate activities for everyone to enjoy, but only YOU can “Have More Fun Than Anyone!”
